Launch of Kashmir: War or Peace and National Discourse on Peace Initiative

Source: Newspaper Report (Book Release Coverage)

At the release of Kashmir: War or Peace, Defence Minister George Fernandes emphasized that violence in Kashmir should not be linked to Prime Minister Vajpayee’s peace initiative, highlighting the broader context of the conflict.

The release of Kashmir: War or Peace, authored by Pyare Lal Kaul, drew significant national attention and was attended by prominent political figures, journalists, and members of civil society. During the event, then Defence Minister George Fernandes addressed the ongoing situation in Kashmir and the importance of viewing it within a broader geopolitical and historical context.

Fernandes stated that the escalation of violence in Kashmir should not be directly linked to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s peace initiatives toward Pakistan. He emphasized that peace efforts are long-term processes and should not be judged solely based on short-term developments or isolated incidents of violence.

Highlighting the complexity of the Kashmir issue, Fernandes remarked that the question of peace extends beyond immediate events and requires sustained confidence-building measures between India and Pakistan. He pointed out that such diplomatic efforts are gradual and must be given time to yield meaningful results.

The event also underscored the relevance of Kaul’s book, which explores the historical roots of the Kashmir conflict, the dynamics of India-Pakistan relations, and the broader debate between war and peace as policy approaches. The presence of senior leaders and widespread media coverage reflected the importance of the subject and the contribution of the book to public discourse.

At the time, renewed diplomatic efforts between India and Pakistan, including restoration of ties and easing of certain restrictions, were seen as steps toward long-term peace. However, ongoing violence in the region highlighted the challenges involved in achieving stability.

Through both the book and the discussions at its launch, Pyare Lal Kaul’s work contributed to a deeper understanding of Kashmir’s complexities and the need for balanced, thoughtful approaches to conflict resolution.
