Pyare Lal Kaul and the Amarnath Land Row Controversy

23 August 2008 Source: NSF Statement / News Report (2008)

Pyare Lal Kaul, convenor of the National Struggle Front, strongly opposed the revocation of land transfer to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, calling it illegal and demanding restoration while highlighting concerns over governance and communal harmony in Jammu & Kashmir.

Pyare Lal Kaul, Convenor of the National Struggle Front (NSF), criticized the decision to revoke the land transfer to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, describing it as an illegal and unjust move. Supporting the agitation led by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti in Jammu, he demanded the cancellation of the revocation order and restoration of the land allocated for the shrine.

The issue gained prominence in 2008 when the Jammu & Kashmir government withdrew land that had previously been granted to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board for facilitating pilgrimage arrangements. This decision triggered widespread protests, particularly in the Jammu region, where it was perceived as discriminatory and politically motivated.

According to Kaul, the revocation not only hurt the sentiments of Hindus across the country but also reflected a failure of governance. He accused authorities and political leaders of ignoring High Court orders and creating an atmosphere of mistrust and division. He further argued that such actions contributed to instability in the region and undermined democratic principles.

The NSF expressed concern over the broader situation in Jammu & Kashmir, pointing to issues like breakdown of law and order, alleged bias in administration, and the marginalization of certain communities. The organization maintained that restoring the land to the Shrine Board was essential not only for facilitating religious pilgrimage but also for ensuring fairness and justice.

Kaul emphasized that the protests led by the Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti were justified and urged the government to act swiftly to address the demands before tensions escalated further. He also highlighted the need for restoring confidence among citizens and ensuring equal treatment of all communities in the region.

The controversy surrounding the Amarnath land transfer became a significant political and social issue, symbolizing deeper regional and communal divides. Kaul’s statement reflected the sentiments of many protestors in Jammu who viewed the revocation as a setback to both religious rights and administrative accountability.
